2 Reviews of the Trespass Camping Event Shelter

By: Oberon  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2016   Rating:

I was looking for an extension for my Berghaus Air4 - but baulked at the price of the Berghaus extension porch. Then I found this. I think that it is excellent!

Unlike a gazebo that I owned previously, this is easy for me to set up on my own. I'm an OAP, so 'easy' is important. And I'm a solo camper, so single-handed erection is essential.

Small pack size is also very important. I did what all old men do, once they get rid of the wife, the kids and the mortgage - I rushed out and bought a sports car. A 3-series BMW convertible. A lovely car, except for the limited luggage space. With the roof down, the boot is full of roof :-( When packing for a camping trip, it helps if you are good at Tetris.

When packed, this shelter is not much bigger than a decent sleeping bag. But erected, it gives lots of lovely extra space.

By happy accident, the rain-brow on the side door of the Air4 fits neatly under the eaves of the shelter. The air4 and the Trespass shelter could have been made for each other.

As Loftus said, unlike some other shelters, this one comes complete with all four sidewalls. They simply attach with toggles and loops. The central toggle & loop are coloured red, so you can't go wrong.

The positioning of the toggles is good. It is possible to attach the side walls so that the top half is open horizontally for ventilation, whilst the lower half affords gives some privacy.

A minor shortcoming of the side-walls is the reason that I only gave this excellent shelter 9/10. The side-walls do not have any pegging loops to hold them steady in the wind. That was easily fixed, of course, by sewing three elasticated loops along the bottom edge.

Now, not only do the walls not billow in the breeze, but I can have them half-open vertically, should I so desire.

As with every tent that I have ever owned, the supplied pegs are inadequate. Just thin alloy wire that will bend double at the first stroke of a mallet. Not a problem - Amazon has a huge selection of substantial peg available for not much money. I bought a batch of 10 inch steel pegs - enough for the Berghaus Air4 and the Trespass shelter for a few quid, together with some v-section 'sand-pegs'. Now I'm ready to pitch on either hard ground or shifting sand - neither of which would have been handled by the supplied pegs. This isn't a particular criticism of the shelter - all manufacturers seem to see pegs as a cost-saving opportunity.

The Trespass shelter is square, 3.5 metres to a side, so it gives lots of extra space and the 2.2 metre height means that few people will be banging their heads on the roof. A family of four could use it as a dining area, for instance.

Sadly, it lacks a central hanging point for a lantern. A small point - but one that I will address in the future.

I've forgotten where I bought my Trespass shelter, but I see that it is currently available on Amazon UK for £175 at the time of writing (May 2017) but a quick search in Google found other sellers offering it at around £120.

Mine has withstood pretty strong winds and some very wet nights. It's inexpensive, compact when packed and easy to erect. What more could you ask for?

This Trespass shelter is oddly only available through Argos (or so it would seem) and not through Trespass themselves. Paid £120 myself as was on offer at the time. Was not sure what this would be like, but it looked OK and reviews reasonably positive, so gave it a go from Argos, knowing it would go back for a full refund if I did not think it was up to it. It did not go back.

So I was looking for a shelter when camping either as a family or with friends to provide sun/rain shelter with sides when required as an alternative to hiding away inside tent/s when the weather was not playing ball. Also something to put up in garden for socials if weather iffy.

From bigger manufacturers there was a more robust option, but sides were extra and question on level of waterproofness from some reviews and considerably more expensive all in. Another big brand shelter was probably of higher quality but with shower/sun protection without doing up all the sides, which kind of defeats the object. There are also some much more expensive shelters air filled and the like, but way beyond the budget for what we wanted.

So this is all in (no additional cost for the sides), lightweight and a small pack size, which is important when needing packing space with all your other camping kit, it has a mixture of sides all of which will keep out wind and wet unlike some other alternatives where some sides are only mesh. The advertised HH is much better on this than a number of other shelters.

Erection of the shelter is pretty straight forward, with the poles easily going through the required sleeves, the last side piece may be tricky for some to get into place on top clip, I am well over 6ft so no issue. Sides clip in and out easily and are not a complete seal which is good for ventilation. One door and 3 sides, 2 with windows mean you can clip and move the walls around as required dependant on conditions. Size wise will easily fit a family around a table, or a bigger group around the outsides on chairs means you can create a social hub when camping whatever the weather. Dismantling quick and easy to return to bag.

Can't comment on long term durability as only had it up for a test and one weekends camping. It was fairly windy and on top of a hill, but nothing too bad, and mostly dry, so was used as a shelter from the wind (3 sides on) and for overnight storage.
